Generation X emerged from the English punk movement of 1976, rising from the remnants of the band Chelsea. The group featured Billy Idol and Tony James, both of whom went on to achieve notable success as solo artists and as members of the band throughout the decade and beyond. Recorded in just one week in a converted garage, the band's debut album was produced by Martin Rushent (known for his work with The Stranglers, Buzzcocks, and The Human League). The record introduced a cleaner, more refined sound, with a particular emphasis on focused vocals, and is often cited as an early influence on the development of pop-punk.
